The sound effects in Dust are frequent and many. It can be easy to ignore all the work that went in to every little detail we may take for granted. I've thrown together just a few sounds I found intriguing and slowed them down to different speeds. The results are highly entertaining:
I give to you, the Dust Sound Challenge!
See how many you can guess. Most are not hard, but I think this illustrates the amount of work behind the scenes.
What are your favorite sounds?

I only got the swarm launcher (the lock on sound was too distinct even when slowed)
For shame! Back in the box you go!
But really, thanks for "playing" IWS.

Interesting how the AR sounds.
Guessed Shotgun, was surprised by the Flaylock.
Nailed Forge Gun. One of the first weapons I picked up in closed beta. Never forget it.
Got the Locus Grenade but at 50% speed. It was hard to hear anything after the pin was pulled at 25%. (Clicking was soft first pass.)
Got the Laser Rifle at 25%. Constant buzzing? Must be firing your lazors.
(At this point I think we're doing weapon sounds.)
WTF? That's not a weapon! UGH. Failed the dropship one.
What weird weapon was that? Oh a bolt pistol. Yeah that's a little too new to me in order to know what it sounds like at slow speed so I'll take my fail on that.
I initially heard it and narrowed it down to an AR variant, the Assault CR, or the HMG. After listening to it for a bit, between timing the bullets to determine ROF and listening to approximately how many total bullets fired, I guessed HMG at the last second. Yes!
I heard it and thought of hacking. Soft beeping and all, but the initial tones didn't match up. When the huge metallic noise came up I was then decisive it was NOT hacking. When there was a rushing sound, my mind immediately went through the whole sound clip in reverse, 4 clunks, soft beeping of a lock, higher tones indicating target being found and initiating lock-on sequence, gotta be the Swarm Launcher! The 50% version just solidified my guess.
Hacking? No. Maybe? Now it's kinda ambient. 25%. Whoa what? I don't know. Oh the cloak field. Well, that was an odd one.
So my grand total was 5 sounds out of 9 guessed correctly at slow speeds!
Wow, nice breakdown. At first I was only going to do weapons, but then I remembered how much I loved the sound of dropships and it took off from there. 5/9 good job!

Immortal John Ripper wrote:Good stuff. :) May I ask what you used to create the ambiance track? FL? Adobe?
For the ambient sounds themselves I used Audacity.
Drag and dropped the video file, applied Paulstretch and adjusted for duration. Slapped on a background and voila! Instant soothing vibes
